Safety Checklist
In attention is the single largest factor shared by those who have suffered personal assaults and attacks. Many victims are chose simply because they were not paying attention - they were easy targets.
You can significantly decrease the odds of ever becoming a victim by taking remembering this important checklist:
Before going out:
- Does anyone know where you're going?
- Have you been there before, or is this a first visit?
- Have you met this customer or client before?
- Have they been into the office?
- Is it possible to take along a buddy for the first visit?
- Have you confirmed the identity of the person you are meeting?
- Do you have your cell phone?
When you arrive at your destination:
- Does everything seem normal or is there questionable activity?
- Are you parked in a well-lit, visible location?
- Is your car blocked if you need to make a quick exit?
After you step out of your car:
- Are there suspicious people around you?
- Are people acting normally?
- Do you know exactly where you're going?
- Is your destination strange or obscure?
- Are you familiar with the territory?
While walking toward your destination:
- Are people coming and going or is the area unusually quiet?
- Do you observe any hazards? Is anyone loitering in the area?
At the door:
- Does everything look normal inside?
- Are you comfortable walking in?
- Is someone following you in?
As you enter:
- Does everything seem normal or is something out of place?
- Is there anyone present who should not be?
Inside - Be Aware & Alert:
- Immediately identify exits, including doors and windows.
- Identify objects you can use in defense or to break a window to draw attention.
- Don't worry about being polite. Follow intuition and take whatever measure is needed to secure your own safety.
- If something feels wrong --it is!
- When threatened, your best bet is to RUN if you can.
